The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called for an enhanced welfare package for judicial officers following the deaths of four senior justices of the country’s judiciary.
They are Justices Chima Centus Nweze, 64, Supreme Court; Raphael Chikwe Agbo, 69, Court of Appeal; Peter Mallong, 60, Federal High Court; and Kate Abiri, 65, High Court of Bayelsa.
A statement by the publicity secretary of the association, Akorede Habeeb Lawal, cautioned that retiring judges should not be allowed to be in distress.
“The NBA finds it concerning to the administration of justice that judicial officers, after serving the nation for most part of their lives, are allowed to die or retire to a life of distress.

“This apparent neglect of judicial officers opens the door for all manner of temptations and it is hurting the nation; it is a direct attack on the dispensation of justice, which is the foundation for the existence of any nation and the necessary atmosphere that will engender economic growth and development,” the NBA said.
