The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Abubakar Mahmoud has urged town planners to be proactive to their responsibility of regulating building constructions in the country.

Mahmoud who made the call in Onitsha while commiserating with victims of the recent fire incident in the area. 

 He said even though disasters cannot be completely avoided but  town planners  should not allow filling stations to be sited near residential areas.

Represented by the third Vice President of NBA, Mr Ben Oji, Mahmoud said, “We are really concerned and understand what each victim must be passing through at this time,” he said.

Also speaking, NBA, Onitsha branch, chairman Mr Arthur Obi-Okafor expressed dismay over the disregard of  byelaws by  lawless people while putting up structures. 

“It is inconceivable that filling stations are built in heavily populated neighbourhood, such that once there is an accident, it will be difficult to manage the situation,” he said.
