Speaking yesterday at the NBBF Full Council Meeting in Abuja, Umar said the Federation has been stretched financially as a result of government lack of concern in funding its programmes.

“I wish to report to this family reunion that all our programmes were executed without any funding from the National Sports Commission, except the flight tickets for the African Nations Cup for Women in Madagascar.

“As a result, the Federation has been stretched financially and in spite of exercising due caution, has found itself in great debt. This situation has prompted us to try to find a long-term solution to the funding challenges facing our federation and quite a number of other federations.

“Part of the effort to tackle the funding problem has been a concerted effort by presidents of all underfunded Federations, except of course football, to take a common position to pressure NSC to make good budgetary allocations to sports federations as appropriated by the National Assembly, with the ultimate goal being accounting independence for the federations to enable them receive direct allocation from the annual national budget,” he said.

Umar also announced that the Executive Committee has approved the formation of eight standing committees, namely, Media and Publicity; Medical and Anti-doping; Women Development; Mini and Youth Basketball Development; Facility and Capacity Development; Marketing and Sponsorship; Adjudication and Disciplinary as well as Technical.
