Neo Black Movement of African (NBM) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and its partners to retract what it described as defamatory online documentary against the movement or face legal action.
Addressing journalists in Benin, chairman body of founders of the movement, Comrade Ernest Amadasun, said said they would seek damages to the tune of N1 billion if it fails to comply
“The BBC and its allies on December 19, broadcast a defamatory online documentary through YouTube and other segment of the organisation ( African eye) against the integrity of the movement and its members.”
He said the documentary and broadcast which has gone viral has defamed and disparage the organisation reputation, character and has caused NBM loss and divestment of integrity by prudent members of the society.
He said on July 18,2021, NBM leadership granted interview to BBC which supposed to be a news item but the BBC and its allies went on “malicious destruction of its reputation by shopping from the internet and unverified sources for negative information against the movement”.
He alleged that the BBC and its anchor person copied video and pictures from the #EndSARS violence incidence with a view to portray NBM as a violent organisation.
According to him, NBM registered in 1977, has been on the fore front for justice and equity in Nigeria, opposed oppressive government and demanded quality education, better condition for civil servants among others.
He said the fact that an NBM member violates the laws land does not make all members law breakers, adding any of its members arrested for crime should be prosecuted and linking the name of NBM to individual’s action.
“Our investigation revealed that certain individuals have turned NBM into money making venture. These unscrupulous individuals and organisations sell fake stories to security agencies band get paid by them under the guise of profiling an organisation that is a global threat. NBM is not faceless and not a threat to the society,” he said.
” We have written a letter through our solicitor to BBC to retract the defamatory documentary within seven days of receipt of the letter dated December 17, and failure to comply we shall proceed to court to seek redress and damages of N1 billion.”
