Rector of the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria, Dr. Danjuma A. Ismaila has raised the alarm over “excessive poaching” of the college staff by other agencies due to poor remuneration.
He demanded an upward review of wages for the workers to stem the trend.
Ismaila spoke during the oversight visit and facility tour of the college by the Chairman, House Committee on Aviation Technology, Tajudeen Kareem Abisodun.
Daily Trust reports that like other aviation agencies, NCAT had lost several instructors to airlines while some of them left the country in the wake of the Japa syndrome.
Last year, a former rector of the College, Capt. Modibbo Alkali disclosed that the college lost no fewer than 20 technical staff in the recent past.
However, NCAT CEO while meeting with the committee appealed for the continued assistance in ensuring improved budgetary allocations and funding for the college.
As quoted in a statement by Director of Information, Dr Jude Amadi, the rector said, “The poor wage profile of the college staff is the major reason for the prevalent attrition and poaching of her trained personnel by sister agencies and the industry sector with higher salary remunerations.”
While appreciating the generous commitment shown by the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo and his predecessors, he assured the committee of his administration’s plans to harness the college’s immense potential to gain maximum benefits for the College and the aviation industry.
The committee chairman praised the contributions of the college in the fortunes of the Nigeria and global aviation industry while pledging government’s support for the college in addressing its major challenges.
