Kano zonal office of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has donated 2 sets of computer devices and a projector in support of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) quiz competition organised annually among secondary school students in Kano state.
The annual competition is an initiative of the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) meant to deepen the knowledge and the use of computer among students of secondary schools across the state.
NCC, in support of this year’s quiz competition, donated a HP Elite pro laptop computer and an Epson projector as rewards for the prospective first prize winner, while an ‘all in one HP pavilion Desktop’ was to be presented as prize for runner-up.
Presenting the gadgets to CITAD’s Executive Director, Mr. Y. Z. Ya’u in Kano on Friday, the Zonal Controller of the NCC, Malam Adamu Amshi identified digital gap between north and sourth as responsible factor inhibiting development in northern states.
“The commission is well aware of the digital gap in Nigeria and particularly in Kano. It is for this reason the commission has worked tirelessly and continuously to bridge the lacuna that has for years set aback development in the state” he stated
He maintained that ICT is an integral part of modern society and therefore encouraged the youth and students to embrace the opportunities inherent in the technology to better their lives.
Y. Z. Ya’u noted that the quiz competition was initiated to build the capacity of the students in the use of ICT and to prepare them for entrance examination into tertiary institutions.
He related the failure in JAMB examination to lack of knowledge in ICT, emphasizing that through the quiz competitions more students would be encouraged to seek knowledge about the use of technologies.
“Two years ago we did a snapshot survey following the massive failure by students of secondary schools in the JAMB examination and we found that one of the reasons was that many of the students were simply seeing computers in front of them at the examination hall without knowing how to use them. It was not that they don’t have the knowledge to answer those questions, but simply that they don’t know how to use the computer” Ya’u revealed.
