The workshop, which is designed for Colleges of Education in the North Central and North West geo-political zones of Nigeria, holds at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), Professor Muhammad Ibn Junaid, said the workshop was packaged to enhance the development of culturally relevant early childhood care and education for pre-service teachers.
“The objective of this workshop is to build the capacity of our teacher educators on the best global practices of training indigenous early childhood care education for pre-service teachers,” he said.
Professor Junaid stressed that the overwhelming public outcry about the poor quality of Nigeria Certificate of Education (NCE) graduates, especially their inability to effectively deliver instruction at the primary school level, has led to the review of the teacher education curriculum.
“This review has led to the expansion of the NCE minimum standards to include five new level-specific NCE programmes namely, Primary Education Studies (PES), Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE), Junior Secondary School Education (JSSE), Adult and Non-formal Education (ANE) and Special Needs Education (SNE) in order to produce specialists for each of the five focal areas,” he said.
Dr. Patience Awopegbato of UNESCO’s International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (IICBA) said the institute collaborates with NCCE to train teachers.
