Speaking at the National Technical Committee (NTC) meeting for teacher development, facilitated by the UK-aid sponsored Teacher Development Programme (TDP) in Abuja, NCCE Executive Secretary, Monday Joshua, said his administration would try to put its feet down and do what it is supposed to do.
He said: “I have planned to remind the provosts that the colleges are under the supervision of the NCCE. The supervisor is not going to take away their jobs, but the supervisor will supervise.”
The executive secretary frowned at the idea of admitting students to read double courses like History and Geography, Physics and Chemistry and more, saying, “When those people graduate, where are they going to work? Already, the environment is saturated with graduate teachers in those subjects, so where will they teach? The colleges have to sit down and address these issues.”
He, however, admitted that colleges were battling with insufficient funds, but said the agenda to reform and produce quality teachers for basic education would take time.
“I know that the colleges are also having their own challenges, especially during the regime of insufficient funding. That is why their attention has been turned to internally generated revenues, and that means admitting as many as they can, even when they do not have the facilities for them,” he added.
