Nigeria confirms 86 new coronavirus cases, total now 627

Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, on Sunday reported 86 new cases of coronavirus, taking the total of confirmed cases in Nigeria to 627.

The cases were reported in Lagos, Abuja (FCT), Katsina, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Jigawa and Borno.

Daily Trust Online, had exclusively reported the index case in Borno state – a retired anesthetic nurse working with an international organisation in Pulka town of Gwoza LGA who died of COVID-19 related symptoms.

Lagos recorded 70 cases while FCT reported 7 cases. Katsina and Akwa Ibom confirmed three cases each, Bauchi recorded one. Jigawa and Borno recorded index case each.

A total of 170 people  have been treated and discharged. Twenty-one people have died from the virus.

Lagos remains the state with the highest number of infections, 376 as at Sunday evening.

1 in Jigawa
1 in Bauchi
1 in Borno

One case previously reported in Kano, has been transferred to Jigawa state, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Kano to 36.

Daily Trust Online, had reported how Kano transferred COVID-19 patient to Jigawa.

The infections have spread to a total 21 states and the FCT.

The breakdown of cases by state is: Lagos- 376; FCT- 88; Kano- 36; Osun- 20; Oyo- 16; Edo- 15; Ogun- 12; Kwara- 9; Katsina- 12; Bauchi- 7 and Kaduna- 6.

Others are Akwa Ibom- 9; Delta- 4; Ekiti- 3; Ondo- 3; Enugu- 2; Rivers-2; Niger- 2; Benue- 1; Anambra- 1; Borno- 1 and Jigawa- 2.

The worldwide death toll from the novel coronavirus pandemic rose to 164,016 on Sunday, according to a tally from official sources compiled by AFP at 1900 GMT.

More than 2,363,210 declared cases have been registered in 193 countries and territories since the epidemic first emerged in China in December.

Of these cases, at least 525,200 are now considered recovered.

The tallies, using data collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO), probably reflect only a fraction of the actual number of infections.

Many countries are testing only the most serious cases.

In the United States, the worst-hit country, the death toll stood at 40,585 with 742,442 infections. At least 67,052 patients have recovered.

Italy is the next most-affected country with 23,660 deaths and 178,972 confirmed infections.

It is followed by Spain with 20,453 fatalities and 195,944 confirmed infections, France with 19,718 deaths and 152,894 infections and Britain with 16,060 deaths and 120,067 cases.

China — excluding Hong Kong and Macau — has to date declared 4,632 deaths and 82,735 cases.

Europe has listed 1,170,258 cases and 103,255 deaths to date, the US and Canada together have 775,825 cases with 42,114 deaths, Asia 163,800 cases with 6,971 deaths, the Middle East 125,213 cases with 5,571 deaths, Latin America and the Caribbean 98,620 cases with 4,924 deaths, Africa 21,615 cases with 1,091 deaths and Oceania 7,879 cases with 90 deaths.
