A number of WhatsApp messages are claiming that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is giving out N45,000 COVID-19 relief.

The NCDC is the country’s national public health institute charged with leading the preparedness, detection and response to infectious disease outbreaks and public health emergencies.

“You just won N45,000 from NCDC due to COVID19 pandemic in Nigeria call us on 09063756881 to claim,” one message reads.

But is the public health agency behind this?

NCDC warns public

Africa Check has debunked a similar claim that the Nigerian government was giving out relief funds to Nigerians. We found that there was no announcement by the government confirming the rumour.

And the NCDC’s communications team told Africa Check the recent messages are also false.

“Any message on relief funds being provided by NCDC is false. Please take responsibility and verify all information before sharing,” it said.

It added that the centre was sending out warnings about the message via SMS and on social media.
