The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has commenced a three-day ICT training and empowerment programme for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Abuja, aimed at equipping participants with vital digital skills.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the executive secretary of the commission, Hon. Ayuba Gufwan, emphasised the significance of digital literacy in fostering inclusivity and independence.

“Today marks a significant milestone in our collective journey towards a truly inclusive and equitable society. In an increasingly digital world, proficiency in ICT is no longer a luxury but a fundamental necessity,” he stated.

Gufwan noted that PWDs have historically faced barriers in accessing digital education and technology, ranging from financial constraints to the lack of accessible infrastructure.

He described the training as a direct response to these challenges, designed to empower participants with essential digital tools.

During the three days, facilitators will guide participants through various topics, including computer literacy, online resource navigation, digital communication tools, e-commerce, and an introduction to digital marketing and data analysis.

“This initiative is not merely about acquiring technical skills; it is about fostering digital inclusion and ensuring every individual, regardless of their physical abilities, has the opportunity to participate meaningfully in the digital economy,” Gufwan added.

The executive secretary expressed gratitude to the commission’s Department of Information and Communication Technology, as well as Meteorite Logistics Limited, for their contributions to the programme. He urged participants to actively engage and make the most of the opportunity.

The training is expected to enhance employability and entrepreneurship among PWDs, enabling them to contribute to national development and innovation.

The commission reiterated its commitment to sustained digital empowerment efforts and called for continued partnerships in fostering a digitally inclusive society.
