The National Centre for Women Development (NCWD) in collaboration with UN Women, Intel Corporation has commenced training women in Technology and Entrepreneurship.
The Director General of the centre, Ms Onyeka Onwenu said the training which is a five-day programme is theme “Promoting Women and Girls Access to ICT and the Internet for Greater Equity” and is geared towards empowering the women to be self reliant economically.
“I am happy to inform you that this training is about skills and empowering the woman to make her more economically independent, in a world of huge opportunities and challenges, where the fast moving ICT sector is the backbone of every business,” she said.
Mr Ezekiel Oyemomi, the Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development (FMWASD) said the training was a means for more women and girls to be equipped with the basic knowledge of ICT.
Oyemomi who was represented by Mr James Olusoji, an acting director  said it would encourage the incorporation of women and girls to economically  develop  the country.
“ICT provides the main tool to reduce discrimination and to empower women for all types of activities; since information and capacity to communicate and to be involved in decision making processes are the basic pillars of empowerment.
He added that the FMWASD had trained lots of women in ICT through the centre and would continue to encourage programmes aimed at training women and girls.
UN Women Representative, Mrs Grace Ongile said that the UN was committed towards keeping up with training and assisting women gain knowledge in ICT.
“We want to ensure that we are committed to ensuring that we will observe and mobilize all the resources necessary to ensure that women are having this ICT because this is the new knowledge whether in business or whatever the women are doing.
“UN Women will on the other hand bring the expertise as a lead actor in the area of gender equality and women’s empowerment.
“As the global organisation, UN Women will also leverage its global presence, networks and operations towards the longer term agenda of this programme,” she said.
Ms Suzanne Fallender, Intel Corporation, Director for Girls and Women Initiative said that the percentage of women in the use of ICT was low.
