The National Council for Women’s Societies (NCWS) in partnership with IPAS yesterday in Abuja organized a forum to sensitise women on the dangers of unsafe abortion as part of activities to mark this year’s International Women’s Day.

The President of (NCWS), Dr. Gloria Laraba Shoda, said unsafe abortion had resulted in about 70,000 deaths worldwide which were fueled by socio-economic vices in societies.

She noted that maternal deaths usually were usually caused by unsafe and unhealthy abortion.

“I urge women to embrace the use of contraceptives in order to reduce unwanted pregnancies which lead to unsafe abortion,” she said.

The Country director for IPAS, Barrister Hauwa Shekarau, noted that Nigeria had a high level of unintended pregnancies which are resolved by abortion.

“It is imperative to state at this point that the major contributor to unsafe abortion in Nigeria is the law which is quite restrictive and does not even take into deliberation the plight of the woman who was raped and becomes pregnant,” She said.
