The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), in collaboration with the Yobe State Government, has destroyed 8 tons and 165 kilograms of various confiscated illicit substances on Tuesday.
The public destruction of the substances was led by the NDLEA’s chairman, Brigadier General Muhammad Buba Marwa (Rtd), and the Deputy Governor of Yobe State, Idi Barde Gubana, in Damaturu, the state capital.
Marwa, who was represented by DCGN Ahmed Suleiman Ningi, the Agency’s Director of Operations and General Investigation, said the state command of the Agency had confiscated 16,000 and 11 kilograms of various illicit substances.
According to him, the Agency obtained a court order authorizing the public destruction of 8 tons and 165 kilograms.
“Since the establishment of the NDLEA Yobe State Command in 2003, the command has recorded a total seizure of 13 tons, 595 kilograms of cannabis (otherwise called Indian hemp), 2,476 kilograms of psychotropic substances, 0.04 kilograms of cocaine, and 0.1 kilograms of heroin, amounting together to 16,000 and 11 kilograms of various illicit substances.
“Of this figure, the Agency obtained a court order authorizing the public destruction of 8 tons, 165 kilograms, while the remaining seven tons are pending in the Federal High Court and are securely stored in the NDLEA Yobe State Command exhibit room.
“A breakdown of the quantity approved for destruction includes 6,791.249 kilograms of cannabis, 1,375.65 kilograms of psychotropic substances, 0.04 kilograms of cocaine, and 0.01 kilograms of heroin,” he said.
He further said the confiscation and destruction of the illicit substances reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to ensuring a drug-free society.
In his remark, the Yobe State Deputy Governor, Idi Barde Gubana, said the state government was committed to supporting the activities of the Agency.
