The five tons illicit drugs, set ablaze under the supervision of the representative of the Chairman/Executive of the agency, Mr Femi Oloruntoba, were seized from  various drug barons in the state .

The commander of the agency in Ekiti State, Prince Ben Ikani, disclosed that 48 arrests were made in the last one year, while no fewer than 105 acres of Indian hemp farms were destroyed in the process.

 He disclosed that most of the farms were discovered at mountain tops which made it highly difficult for his command to fight the drug barons, detect and access the farms.

Ikanni noted that no fewer than 26 culprits had been convicted by the High Court in the state for various offences relating to drugs.

The representative of the chief executive of the NDLEA, Mr Oloruntoba, who is the Director, Prosecution and Legal Matters of the agency, pointed out that most of the people arrested for various drug offences were also on drugs.

Oloruntoba disclosed that 50 per cent of motorcyclists and commercial drivers were on drug, adding that they took hard drug called ‘monkey tail’ before setting out for the day’s business.

He condemned the use of hard drugs, saying they had negative impact on the economic growth, education, food security and political stability of the nation.

The state commissioner for health, Dr. Femi Thomas, called for the establishment of a rehabilitation centre in the state for those who had been affected by drugs.
