The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has discovered an Indian hemp plantation in Sokoto State.

The state’s Commander, Iro Adamu, said the discovery was made Friday night at Sanyinna area in Tambuwal Local Government Area of the state, following an intelligent report.

“It was planted on the maize farm so that only experts could understand what it is. It was a foreign variety which is very effective and costly,” he said.

Adamu noted that this was the first time such a farm was discovered in the state, and thus called for a rigorous campaign and patrol in order to discourage locals from venturing into the unlawful business.

A 32-year-old man, Anas Sani, believed to be the owner of the plantation, was arrested and after investigation, he would be charged to court.

The suspect, who is a father of two, told journalists that he learnt the business while owning a provision shop in Lagos.

“I am a first timer in the business. I learnt it while living in Lagos and decided to give it a trial at my hometown of Sanyinna. My elder brother tried his best to discourage me but I ignored all his advices,” he said.

He said: “I was arrested before I could start reaping the benefit of the business. I am ready to face the consequences of my action because it will discourage others who are interested in the business.”
