Rounds of ammunition hidden inside a bag of garri and uncovered by the NDLEA officers
Officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on patrol along the Abuja-Kaduna highway have intercepted 1,989 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition concealed in sacks of cassava granules, popularly known as garri.
The agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja.
The NDLEA spokesman identified the suspect as 35-year-old Abdullahi Hassan, noting that both the suspect and the exhibits had been handed over to another security agency for further investigation.
The agency also intercepted consignments of cocaine and opioids concealed in export packages bound for the United Kingdom and Australia, while operatives destroyed 65,000 kilograms of skunk in forests in Delta State.
According to him, the seizures were made on Friday, May 15, during the examination of shipments at a courier company in Lagos.
Babafemi said NDLEA operatives recovered 170 grams of cocaine hidden inside the walls of a carton containing clothes meant for Australia.
He added that another carton destined for the United Kingdom was found to contain 200 ampoules of pentazocine injection, 1,100 capsules of tramadol and 100 ampoules of promethazine injection.
In Delta State, the NDLEA spokesperson said operatives raided Ejeonu village in Ukwuani Local Government Area on May 10, where they destroyed 27,500 kilograms of skunk cultivated on 11 hectares of farmland and recovered an additional 22.9 kilograms of the substance.
He said a 52-year-old suspect, Ifeanyichukwu Peter, was arrested in a follow-up operation at Obiaruku.
Babafemi further stated that another raid at Orogun village in Ughelli North Local Government Area on May 12 led to the destruction of 37,500 kilograms of skunk cultivated on 15 hectares of farmland.
According to him, operatives also recovered 55.4 kilograms of the substance and arrested a suspect, 30-year-old Godwin Vincent Osadera.
“The combined operations, carried out with military support, resulted in the destruction of 65,000 kilograms of skunk,” he said.
In Kaduna State, Babafemi said NDLEA operatives recovered 361 kilograms of skunk and arrested a 42-year-old suspect, Husaini Suleiman, during a raid in the Dan Magaji area of Zaria on May 13.
In the Federal Capital Territory, Babafemi said operatives arrested a 29-year-old businessman, Ogadi Peter, alleged to specialise in producing drug-laced cakes and cookies for parties and social gatherings.
He said the suspect was arrested at his residence in the Life Camp area of Abuja, where officers recovered 800 grams of skunk and 2.7 kilograms of drug-infused cookies.
Babafemi also disclosed that NDLEA operatives recovered 181 kilograms of skunk from a suspect, Aliyu Sani, during a raid in the Ogere area of Ogun State.
He said another suspect, 27-year-old Sufiyanu Mohammed Misa, was arrested along the Zaki-Biam Road in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State with 105,850 pills of opioids, including tramadol, diazepam and exol-5.
In Oyo State, Babafemi said two suspects — Adeleke Olamide Aliyah, 20, and Aloba Abdulazeez, 25 — were arrested in Saki town in connection with the seizure of 99 litres of skuchies.
He added that NDLEA operatives in Edo State destroyed 1,388.4 kilograms of skunk on two farms during a raid in Ago Forest, Orhionmwon Local Government Area.
Babafemi further said operatives in Kano recovered 1.2 kilograms of tramaking 225mg pills concealed in a 25-litre jerrycan of palm oil at Kofar Ruwa motor park.
He said another suspect, Aminu Isa, 35, was arrested at Sabuwar Sharada with 30.5 kilograms of skunk.
The NDLEA spokesman noted that the agency’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitisation campaign continued in schools across Oyo, Niger, Lagos, Katsina, Ekiti and Kano states.
He said the NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mohammed Buba Marwa, commended officers and men of the agency for the arrests, seizures and sustained anti-drug advocacy campaigns across the country.
