The National Economic Council (NEC) has constituted a special committee on livestock development to accelerate the implementation of livestock production reforms across Nigeria.
The committee was inaugurated on Wednesday during the 155th NEC meeting held virtually as part of efforts to address food insecurity and the lingering farmer–herder conflict.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who chairs the council, said sustainable food security could only be achieved through practical and nationally accepted solutions to the crisis.
The committee comprises one representative from each of the six geo-political zones: Bauchi (North East), Niger (North Central), Kebbi (North West), Ondo (South West), Imo (South East) and Cross River (South South).
Other members include the ministers of livestock development; agriculture and food security; budget and economic planning and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Agribusiness in the Office of the Vice President.
The NEC directed the committee to review the recommendations of the Presidential Livestock Reform Committee (PLRC) and proposals from the Ministry of Livestock Development, as well as identify states willing to participate in the programme.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earlier directed the NEC at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting of December 10, 2025, to work with the Ministry of Livestock Development to produce a roadmap for transforming the livestock sector into a modern, peaceful and profitable contributor to national development.
