The National Examinations Council (NECO) has warned school owners and other stakeholders to cease enroling candidates for its examinations through proxies.

The council, in a statement by Azeez Sani, Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, said such fraudulent practices contribute to identity theft and the issuance of fake results.

NECO has introduced various measures to combat examination malpractice and impersonation in its exams. These measures include the use of biometric data capture devices, customised answer booklets, and the embossing of candidates’ photographs and birth dates on original certificates.

Additionally, NECO launched the e-Verify platform last year, an online system for confirming and verifying NECO results.

“Members of the public should be aware that any certificate claimed to be issued by the Council that cannot be verified or authenticated using the NECO e-Verify platform is fake,” the statement clarified.

NECO also urged state ministries of education and school administrators to ensure that only the personal details of legitimate candidates are used during exam registration.

Sani further noted that candidates found guilty of impersonation in the recently concluded 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) have had their results withheld.
