The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has built a modern firefighting station and donated a brand new fire truck, offices and a functional borehole to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi.

The facility, designed to operate 24 hours daily, is equipped with a modern firefighting vehicle, offices for personnel and a borehole to ensure a steady water supply.

While commissioning and handing over the project to ATBU management, the Minister of State, Ministry of Regional Development, Alhaji Uba Maigari Ahmadu, thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support for development commissions under the ministry.

“It is my honour and singular privilege, on behalf of the ministry, the commission and the House of Representatives Committee on the North East Development Commission, to commission this edifice in the name of God Almighty, for the service and benefit of humanity,” the minister said.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NEDC, Mohammed Goni Alkali, said the project was initiated to protect lives and property in the event of fire outbreaks within the university community.

He urged the university management to take ownership of the facility and ensure proper maintenance to achieve its objectives.

Receiving the project, the Vice Chancellor of ATBU, Professor Ibrahim Hassan Garba, represented by the University Librarian, Dr Dauda Adamu Bakum, described the fire station as more than just an infrastructure.

“This station is a beacon of security equipped with modern firefighting tools and a rapid-response vehicle. It will safeguard our laboratories, hostels, lecture halls and the over 23,000 souls who call ATBU home,” he said.

Bakum added that the project would also serve neighbouring communities and Bauchi State at large.

“This fire station stands as a testament to your commitment to safety, resilience and the sustainable development of the North East region. We are eternally grateful, and may Allah bless you and the entire NEDC family,” he said.

 

Earlier, the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on NEDC, commended the commission for executing projects that directly improve the living standards of people across the subregion.
