The North East Youth Council yesterday said the e-mobility project of the North East Development Commission (NEDC) will cushion the economic impact of the fuel subsidy removal and make commuting cheaper and more sustainable for residents of the zone.
The publicity secretary of the council, Ahmed Isa Azare, in a statement, noted that the initiative, designed to ease transportation in the North East, had begun with the rollout of electric buses in Maiduguri, Borno State Capital, would soon be extended to the rest of the zone.
“It will see the deployment of electric buses, taxis, and tricycles for both intra- and inter-state travel, reducing reliance on petrol and diesel while providing more affordable, eco-friendly transport options.
“It is a bold step towards modernising the region’s transport system while addressing environmental concerns,” he stated.
According to him, the integration of clean energy solutions into everyday life will further strengthen economic resilience in the post-insurgency era.
Azare also commended the NEDC for its prompt and sustained response to emergencies across the zone, “particularly during the devastating floods that ravaged several communities in northern Bauchi last year.”
