I wish to bring to the notice of the Jigawa State governor and the relevant authorities, the alarming rate of tree felling in villages across the state. The most affected areas are Dutse and Birnin Kudu Local government areas.
Many operators of timber cutting machines are moving from one village to another cutting down most of the economic and medicinal trees. The development is worrisome because the process of planting and nurturing those trees to maturity is quite cumbersome.
Jigawa is among states suffering desertification and if no action is taken, this practice could completely destroy our ecosystem. The authorities should take urgent steps to tackle the issue.
A law should be made to check deforestation and other illegal practices which lead to the felling of economic trees.
