Need to end rising rape cases

There has been resurgence in rape cases in recent times. In some of the cases, the perpetrators killed their victims after the dastardly crime.

A recent case was that of a 100 level Microbiology student of University of Benin, Miss Vera Uwaila, who died from injuries sustained after she was gang-raped and hit with a fire extinguisher in her church.

It was gathered that the 22-year-old undergraduate was attacked and beaten to a pulp at the Ikpoba Hill branch of Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, in Benin, Edo State, where she had gone to read.

In Katsina, no fewer than 13 rape victims were said to have been treated at the Funtua General Hospital in Katsina State from January to date, the hospital’s Medical Director, Tijjani Bakori, has said.

Apart from the aforementioned, there are many unreported cases of rape and sexual violence going on in many parts of the country virtually on daily basis.

The authorities must rise up to end this ugly trend of sexual violence against girls and women.

I call on the police to fish out the perpetrators of this horrible crime and bring them to justice.
