The Abuja office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has called for more support for Internally Displaced People (IDPs), especially during the festive period.

The head of the Abuja operational office, Justin Uwazuruonye, made the appeal at Gongola IDP camp in New Kuchingoro, Jabi-Idu, Abuja when two non-governmental organisations visited the camp to mark what they called the food festival for the children.

PatSliver Foundation and Irose Foundation for Widows and Children had visited the camp to feed the children and identify with them.

Justin, who was represented by Mrs Opara Chinwe, an assistant director in the office, commended the two organisations for the gesture, assuring that NEMA would continue to identify with any organisation or individual for the welfare of displaced people, reminding Nigerians that government alone cannot shoulder such responsibility.

Earlier, Evelyn Mensah Agu, Director PatSilver Foundation, said over 1,000 children would benefit from the gesture, adding that about 60 girls would also be given sanitary towels.

In his remarks, the initiator of the programme, Irose Gold of Irose Foundation for Widows and Children, said the package would include scholarship for the children, uniforms and learning materials among others, adding that the project would start in January when the new term begins.

City News reports that items donated included bags of rice, yam tubers, potato, garri, corn flour, onions, spaghetti, salt, seasoning cubes among others.
