North Central Zone of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) yesterday in Jos sensitized communities and institutions on proper waste management to prevent and mitigate flood disaster in the state.
The awareness exercise according to NEMA was meant to build the capacity of communities and institutions especially law enforcement agencies, town planners and waste management agencies to identify and respond to disasters and emergencies in a timely manner, as well as planning longer term prevention and mitigation actions which will enable communities protect their lives and assets.
Speaking at the event, North-Central Coordinator of NEMA, Abdulsalam Muhammad, said that improper waste management and disposal and the flagrant disregard for building, planning and environmental laws have remained some of the major causes for the urban flooding in the country.
Muhammad added, “Apart from the issue of improper waste management and disregard for building and environmental laws being hazards for flooding in our communities, NEMA as well as various dam management agencies have notified the general public of the possibility of water release from the various dams.
