The Labour Party (LP) has elected Senator Nenadi Usman as its National Chairman.
She was elected along with others at its national convention held in Umuahia, Abia State, making her the first woman to emerge as national chairman of a political party in Nigeria.
Her emergence, alongside other members of the National Working Committee (NWC), was by consensus and ratified through acclamation by delegates at the convention.
It would be recalled that Usman had been leading the party as chairman of its National Caretaker Committee since September 4, 2024, following a leadership vacuum created by the expiration of the tenure of the former executives.
She steered the party through a protracted leadership crisis, which was eventually resolved in her favour by the courts.
Her position was further strengthened after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recognised her leadership of the party in January 2026, following a Federal High Court judgment delivered on January 21, 2026. The decision was subsequently upheld by the Court of Appeal in a unanimous judgment on April 21, 2026.
In her acceptance speech, Usman thanked party members for the confidence reposed in her and pledged to reposition the party for greater electoral success.
“I will not let the party down. We will work to strengthen our structures and ensure that the Labour Party remains a viable platform for Nigerians,” she said.
She commended the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, for what she described as exemplary leadership and support for the party.
In his remarks, Otti charged the newly elected NWC to provide purposeful leadership and deepen the party’s structures across the country, and also to engage in reconsiliation with aggrieved members of the party.
Other officials elected at the convention include Rt. Hon. Iheanacho Obioma as National Secretary, Mrs. Nike Oriola as Deputy National Chairman, Ken Eluma Asogwa as National Publicity Secretary, Mrs. Oluchi Oparah as National Organising Secretary, Comrade Anslem Eragbe as National Financial Secretary, and Hilda Dokubo as National Women Leader, among others.
The newly elected NWC was subsequently sworn in and has assumed office.
