President Goodluck Jonathan has commiserated with the government and people of Nepal over the loss of thousands of lives in the recent devastating earthquake that occurred in the country.

Death toll in the quake has exceeded 4,000, according to reports coming out of the region.

In a condolence message, Jonathan said the tragedy had caused deep sorrow, not just for the Nepalese, but all humanity.

Jonathan assured the government and people of Nepal of the deepest sympathy and solidarity of the people of Nigeria as they mourn those who lost their lives to the earthquake and begin the onerous task of rehabilitating survivors and rebuilding affected parts of their country.

The President also assured the Nepalese government of Nigeria’s preparedness to join other sympathetic nations in assisting the people of Nepal to overcome the damage and destruction caused by the earthquake.

Nine out of 10 Nepalese troops are said to be involved in search and rescue operations, as the country pleads for more foreign, reported the BBC.

Almost the entire army and police has joined the quake effort, officials say.

China, India, the UK and US are among those sending aid from abroad.

Nepal says it needs everything from blankets and helicopters to doctors and drivers.

Some 200 climbers stranded by the quake on Mount Everest are being rescued.

About 60 of the climbers had been brought to safety by helicopters on Monday, according to Tulsi Gautam, the chief of Nepal’s tourism agency.
