The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), in collaboration with the Kano State Ministry of Women, Children and People with Special Needs on Tuesday trained over 60 women on export competency and modern product packaging for effective and standard exportation of made in Nigerian products.

The one-day enlightenment training focused on women inclusion, export competency development and modern export products packaging as catalysts for effective exportation.

According to NEPC’s North West Regional Coordinator, Hajiya Amina Abdulmalik the initiative seeks to empower women to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s economic development through export.

She said the council aims to equip cooperative women groups with the skills and certifications needed to meet international export standards.

“Women play a vital role in our economy. This training is designed to help them perfect their products, improve packaging, and meet global standards,” Abdulmalik said.

She noted that while many women already produce quality goods, poor finishing and packaging often hinder their marketability.

“Packaging sells the product. If the finishing is unattractive, buyers walk away, even if the product itself is excellent,” she added.

The NEPC, she explained, regularly conducts capacity-building programs and offers support to women whose products show export potential.

Abdulmalik also explained that selected participants may receive internationally recognized certifications such as FDA approval and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) certificates to be fully funded by the Council.

Abdulmalik also highlighted NEPC’s commitment to women inclusivity, revealing that the agency has dedicated departments for women empowerment across its state offices nationwide.

Also speaking, the Kano state Commissioner for Women, Children and People with Special Needs, Amina Abdullahi, said the ministry always enlightens women in the state about their export potentials to penetrate the international market.

The Commissioner, who was represented by Deputy Director, Women Affairs department of the ministry, Umma Muhammad, said the training is timely and is in line with the state government’s commitment to women economic development.

The 60 participants of the training were drawn from various local government areas in the state and were selected through the Ministry’s database of cooperative women groups.
