Briefing newsmen at the NERDC’s headquarters in Sheda, Abuja, the executive secretary of the council, Godswill Obioma, said the results of the exercise will be used for planning interventions and future improvement of the curriculum.
Obioma said curriculum implementation is a complex exercise that requires strategic and sustainability plans, noting that the council had already trained a number of master trainers on the use of the curriculum and teachers’ guides and deployed them to the 36 states and FCT.
He said: “The next step towards ensuring proper implementation of the curriculum include printing and dissemination of the primary 4-6 booklets of the curriculum, capacity building of teachers, review and development of textual materials and other teaching aids and development of e-curriculum recourse portal for teachers and learners.”
He said the monitoring team will visit three primary schools, three JSS schools and one federal government college in each state.
The NERDC boss said the exercise is aimed at verifying the extent of using the teachers’ guide for the implementation of the new curriculum by states and whether or not the 9-year revised curriculum is in use in the schools.
He pointed out that the visit will also unveil the challenges affecting the implementation of the curriculum in both rural and urban schools.
Obioma said implementation of the curriculum has already commenced at the primary one and JS1 classes since September last year, while for primary 2-3 and JS2 and 3, classes will commence in September 2015 and 2016 respectively.
He added that the curriculum will be implemented at the JS 4-6 classes by September 2017, 2018 and 2019 respectively.
