The Air Burner was donated to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) during the agency’s exhibit burning ceremony where narcotics worth about N1.9 billion were destroyed.
It has the capability of burning narcotics and other harmful wastes without emitting dangerous gases into the atmosphere.
NESREA which has the responsibility of enforcing environmental laws, guidelines, standards and regulations, said it procured the equipment to ensure that NDLEA adopts sustainable burning procedure in the destruction of seized drugs.
The Supervising Minister of Environment, Mr Darius Dickson Ishaku said the equipment is imperative in order to protect the environment from the continuous emission of obnoxious gases into the atmosphere.
Such gases, according to him, increase the level of greenhouse gases which leads to climate change.
Ishaku who condemned open burning, said the National Environment (Control of Bush, Forest Fire and Open Burning) Regulations, 2011, was enacted to stem the tide and urged other regulatory agencies whose activities involve open burning of seized, confisticated, unwanted products and materials to adopt the use of the technology to achieve a cleaner environment.
He commended NESREA for the initiative for promoting world best practices while the Director General of NESREA, Dr Ngeri Benebo reiterated the readiness of the agency to protect the society against destruction of the ecosystem, noting thtat this has become essential and necessitated the procurement of the equipment.
