The agency said it is out to enhance all environmental standards in the state in accordance with the laws.
This was announced by the State Coordinator, Mr. Ralph Nnam, when the Executive Director of a non-governmental organization, friends of Environment and Technology Organization, Engr. David Missang Alobi, paid him a courtesy visit in his office.
Nnam said NESREA has the mandate to enforce all environmental laws, standards and regulations in the country and therefore had to shut down six quarries and construction companies in the state for failing to provide what he described as environmental impact assessment statement.
“We will not presently mention the six defaulting firms. Some of them that were sealed paid the necessary fine. If you have not done environmental impact assessment and your operation is already having impact on the environment, NESREA will not tell you to go back and do your environmental impact assessments but what you do is to a pay a violation fee for not doing environmental impact assessments and NESREA will still subject you to environmental audit,” he said.
The NESREA State Coordinator also disclosed that the two persons were arrested for breaking the seal placed on their companies, adding that after investigation they will be charged to court.
“Some that were sealed has been unsealed because they have paid the violation fee of N1.1 million,” he said.
