He emphasized that the aim of the scheme is to ensure that all Nigerians, irrespective of their social, political or economic background get quality care without being discriminated against.
The new NHIS boss speaking at the official handing over ceremony at the NHIS office in Abuja, assured the workers of improved welfare package to enhance their performance in the efforts to ensure universal coverage for Nigerians.
He said: “Our service here is service for lowly people, that is making them benefit maximally from available service. That should be our target. There shouldn’t be any discrimination in terms of access.
“ Incidentally, this is something that has been provided for in the constitution. Infact the constitution says that government owes it as a duty to guarantee healthcare for it’s citizens. So we are going to be the tools that government will use to achieve their aim.”
Earlier, the former acting executive secretary, Dr. Abdulraham Sambo said the socio-political situation in the country is a hindrance to the expansion of the scheme.
He urged the new NHIS boss to ensure that he gets the support of all stakeholders.
He said President Goodluck Jonathan plans to organize a summit to address most of the issues early next year.
