New Studies Offer Insights Into AI, Offshore Safety, Drilling Efficiency

There is a quiet revolution happening in Nigerian engineering, and Kelechi Anthony Ofonagoro is one of the men driving it.

In 2023, the Nigerian engineer and Managing Director published three peer-reviewed papers in internationally recognised academic journals, each one tackling a different dimension of the energy sector’s most pressing technical problems. In the first of his three 2023 papers, published in the journal Advances in Industrial Engineering and Management, Ofonagoro asks a question that energy facility managers around the world are increasingly being forced to answer: how well are artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies actually being used to maintain the infrastructure we depend on? The paper, titled “The Rise of Smart Asset Management: A Review of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Applications in Energy Facilities Maintenance,” is a systematic and critical review of the current state of AI adoption in energy infrastructure maintenance. Ofonagoro does not write from the perspective of a technology enthusiast selling a vision. He writes as a rigorous researcher, mapping what has worked, where implementation has fallen short, and what conditions determine whether AI-driven predictive maintenance actually delivers on its promise.

The core problem he addresses is one familiar to any engineer who has worked in an energy facility: traditional maintenance approaches, reactive repairs after failure or scheduled replacements regardless of equipment condition, are wasteful, risky, and increasingly unnecessary given what modern sensor systems and machine learning algorithms can do. His review synthesises the evidence for smarter alternatives, providing a structured framework that practitioners can apply when evaluating or deploying AI-based maintenance systems. For Nigeria, where energy infrastructure reliability is a persistent national concern and where the gap between available technology and actual deployment remains wide, this research speaks directly to a local problem through the lens of international scholarship.

The second paper Ofonagoro published in 2023 shifts attention to the offshore oil and gas environment, a domain where the stakes of poor maintenance are measured not only in production losses but in potential environmental catastrophe. Published in the journal Economic Growth and Environment Sustainability, the paper is titled “Advancing Offshore Oil and Gas Facilities: A Comprehensive Review of Innovative Maintenance Strategies for Enhanced Reliability and Efficiency.” In it, Ofonagoro conducts a rigorous examination of the maintenance strategies available to offshore operators, assessing their effectiveness in improving reliability, reducing unplanned downtime, and managing environmental exposure. His argument runs deeper than technical optimisation. He contends that offshore operators who treat maintenance as a purely mechanical obligation, disconnected from sustainability outcomes, are missing the fuller picture. Ageing infrastructure poorly maintained is not merely an operational risk but an environmental liability. The most geographically specific of his three papers, and in some respects the most immediately consequential for Nigeria, was published in the Engineering Heritage Journal under the title “Enhancing Pore Pressure Prediction in Oil Well Drilling: A Comprehensive Study of Well Planning and Cost-Effective Modeling in the Niger Delta Region.” Pore pressure prediction determines how safely and efficiently a well can be drilled. When formation pressures are incorrectly estimated, engineers select the wrong drilling mud weights, well barriers are inadequately designed, and the risk of a well control incident including blowouts increases significantly. The Niger Delta’s complex and highly variable geology make accurate pore pressure prediction particularly difficult, and existing models built on data from other basins have repeatedly proven unreliable in this environment. Ofonagoro’s paper proposes a cost-effective predictive modeling framework calibrated specifically to Niger Delta subsurface conditions. Using regionally sourced well data, he demonstrates how prediction accuracy can be meaningfully improved without the prohibitive costs that often deter smaller operators from investing in sophisticated pre-drill analysis. In a region where well control incidents have historically carried severe human, environmental, and reputational consequences, a reliable and affordable pore pressure prediction methodology developed by a Nigerian researcher who understands the local geology is a contribution of genuine practical value.

Nigeria is at a crossroads in its energy sector. Declining oil revenues, ageing upstream infrastructure, persistent safety and environmental concerns, and the global pressure to transition toward cleaner energy sources are all converging simultaneously. In this environment, the country needs not only foreign capital and technology transfer but Nigerians who are producing original, peer-reviewed knowledge that the world’s engineers can read, cite, and build upon. That Kelechi Anthony Ofonagoro, a Managing Director carrying the weight of organisational leadership, is simultaneously producing this calibre of peer-reviewed scholarship is itself a signal of how seriously he takes Nigeria’s role in the global engineering conversation.
