The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), has said it has become imperative to review and improve censorship criteria and classification in Nigeria.
The Director General of agency, Mrs. Patricia Bala made the disclosure on Wednesday while speaking with newsmen during the international conference on film censorship held at Crest Hotel in Jos, Plateau State.
Bala said the main objective of the event is to explore ways to deploy bands-on techniques to improve movie censorship that would make Nigerian films to be in line with global best practices and also project the country’s identity.
The NFVCB boss further said the conference is meant to gain perspectives and practical understanding for improved censorship/classification model to protect and project basic forms, values and belief systems while making room for more comprehensive and appropriate decisions on Nigerian movies.
"We are ready to develop a template that would review and reform the criteria for movie censorship in Nigeria. We also focus on gaining new perspectives on comparative practices in order to build the capacity of young and vulnerable from consequences of unwholesome and dysfunction movies," she said.
She however said the board is walking on a tight rope as it faces the challenge of protecting the society from harmful cinematic portrayals and promoting artistic freedom of expression.
