As part of its mandate to identify young talented artists and encourage them to practice art and choose same as a career, the National Gallery of Art, (NGA) has announced the second edition of its ‘Rainbow Art: Unlocking Creativity’ series.

According to NGA’s Director of Educational Services, Dr. Evelyn Otaigbe, ina statement, the theme of this edition is ‘A new Nigeria: The Hope of the Nigerian Child and Youth.’

The series which is hinged on unleashing the creative talents of children and youth, is divided into seven segments – art/free style competition, folktales/drama, face painting/balloons, hat/dress/beadmaking and literature sessions. It is open to children from primary and secondary schools as well as youths within Abuja to participate in the interactive programme which has specific tasks for each category for the children and youths to bring out their innate talents.

Otaigbe said, “For the art competition, participants are expected to produce art works based on a given theme and in a competitive environment. This is in a bid to expose their level of creativity, engender the spirit of competition and generate perceptual appeal.”

The folktale and face painting exercises are expected to stimulate the imagination and create fun through the application of non-permanent colours on the faces of the participants, respectively.

She explained that, the key objectives include developing the idea of critical thinking and reasoning; improving the art of imaginative composition necessary to unlock the level of creativity; making participants to love colours and develop painting skills and identifying motifs on faces which may be used in future art production among others.

Participants in the hat and bead making session, will be exposed to the three-dimensional art of hat and bead making, thereby improving their skills which would help them develop interest in ceramics and sculpture.

It is expected that, the head tying and cartoon characters sessions will help participants develop the necessary skills, as those who will participate in the balloon making, dance and visual art sessions, for an all-round experience.

The event is scheduled for June 17 at the Cyprian Ekwensi Centre for Arts & Culture, Abuja.
