The Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF) has expressed strong optimism about the future of golf in the country following the impressive displays recorded at the 9th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State.

Speaking at the Ibori Golf and Country Club, venue of the Games, NGF Technical Director, Mr. Olajide Bolaji, noted that golf is not only a prestigious sport but also a major medal-winning event, with 24 medals on offer in this year’s edition.

“We have great potential with our youths in the game of golf,” Bolaji said, stressing that the tournament had already unveiled a crop of promising young players from more than 22 states.

He further highlighted Nigeria’s growing presence on the international stage, recalling that one of the participants at the Youth Games recently represented the country at the World School Championship in Morocco.

Bolaji commended Delta State for its hosting efforts, applauding the quality of the golf course but called for continuous upgrades to sustain progress.

He also emphasized the wider benefits of the sport, particularly its networking opportunities.

“It’s a game of like-minded people; you tend to meet people of affluence, influence, and more,” he explained.

While acknowledging efforts already made, Bolaji appealed for greater backing from both government and the private sector, insisting that sustainable investment is crucial for growth.

“The Government is trying, but they can do better. As a body, we want to compete with other golfers worldwide and groom our children properly. Hence, we need proper support—financially and otherwise,” he said.
