The Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF) has submitted a proposal to the Presidency seeking approval to stage the 2026 President Cup.

NGF President, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, disclosed this while briefing the media on the federation’s strategic initiatives, which include the proposed introduction of the Tomorrow Golf League (TGL) in Africa, alongside flagship tournaments such as the Governor’s Golf Classic, the Nigerian Open and the Nigerian Classic.

Runsewe recalled that the President Cup, regarded as one of the major fixtures on the Nigerian golf calendar, was last held in 2011 when former President Goodluck Jonathan teed off the tournament at the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja.

Speaking in Abuja, the NGF president noted that the federation is currently awaiting feedback from the Presidency following the submission of the proposal.

He also acknowledged the role of former Plateau State Governor, Senator Simon Lalong, who facilitated the process by personally delivering the proposal to the appropriate authorities and offering his support to the initiative.

Runsewe said: “And I believe this is the time to promote the President Cup, because you don’t have two presidents at the same time. The letters are there, because we took them there. So, either we have to revisit the that letter. It is a shame, there is no country in Africa that don’t have their Presidents Cup yearly.”

He added that the matter should be addressed saying: “So, after this report, I want to assure you that we do will something about it”.
