The President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, has said that the Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige, is now the government of Nigeria.

Osodeke stated this during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today.

The ASUU president was commenting on the ‘half-salary’ the government paid university lecturers for October and the comment the minister made after the incidence.

He said, “We had given them the opportunity to pass through this system without what he is talking about. Similar thing happened in 1992 and when Babangida government said how can we form this, we gave them the means, which is TETFUND today.

“In this agreement, we gave them what Nigeria should do without passing through this to fund education, but they are not interested in reading those areas; they are looking at the monetary value without looking at the system. Any government which is depending on petroleum which is gone is heading for disaster.

“I want to say this that the Minister of Labour is not the Nigerian government. The person who can talk about financing is the minster of finance. The person to talk about education is the minister of education. You have now appropriated all these issues; you are now the government. Minister of Labour is now the government of Nigeria.”
