This was disclosed in Calabar by Mrs Ini Onuk, the acting director of The Bridge Leadership Foundation (TBLF), a Non-Governmental Organization founded by the Governor Liyel Imoke five months ago to ‘raise a generation of transformational leaders’ when she briefed the press about the ‘Community Connects for Youth Leadership’ programme organized by the TBLF.
She said 128 players age between 16 and 23 have been registered from 16 teams across the state and that the actual number needed for the World Street Soccer championship in Mexico next year would then be selected through series of football games at St. Patrick College in Calabar. She also added that 16 coaches would be trained.
Speaking about the possibility of raising a team to participate in any FIFA graded matches, she revealed that, “Already we have hosted some FIFA and NFF officials in charge of this kind of tournament. They came to inspect the kind of facilities in Cross River State that are available for the training”. She added that “this initiative will use the game of football to teach Leadership and Fair play skills for personal and community development in the state”.
Onuk maintained that this would further help to enhance the capacity of young people using football which is a common passion and inculcate other values in them.
The executive director of Search and Groom, Yomi Kuku which has been involved in similar tournament and actually participated in the last ‘Football for Hope’ FIFA organized world street football tournament in South Africa, assured that his collaboration with TBLF would ensure the raising of a desired squad for the Mexico tournament.
