A non-governmental organisation, Juremi Foundation, will on July 21, hold a Disability Awareness Walk in Abuja to create awareness and sensitise the public on the importance of creating equal opportunities for physically challenged persons in the society. The spokesperson of the foundation, Aisha Abubakar, said at a news conference in Abuja yesterday that the event tagged; Juremi-Ability in Disability (J-AID Walk) is expected to attract over 5,000 people. The event, she said, would take off from the Eagle Square and terminate at the Unity Fountain, adding that it would not be the only event to draw the attention of President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the Disability Bill into law in view of its importance to people with disabilities. She argued that assenting to the bill would enhance the rights and rehabilitation of over 25 million physically challenged Nigerians.

“As a foundation, we are in support of the disability bill, and that is the reason why we are trying to create more awareness, this bill is very important. There are discriminations taking place against people with disabilities. Some in their working places, they hardly cope because they are not disability-friendly. Even in banks, there are lots of places where people with disabilities have difficulties assessing such institutions,” she said.
