A nongovernmental organisation, Pencils for Africa (P4A), has donated 7,000 pencils, about 500 books and five laptops to hundreds of school children in Kaduna and Abuja.
The organization is the brain-child of 16-year-old Habiba Odogba, a junior at Kettle Moraine High School in Wales, Wisconsin, USA.
Habiba said the organisation donated books to ABU Staff School in Zaria as well as pencils and laptops to GRA Model Primary School in Hanwa-Zaria and Model Primary School in Maitama, Abuja.
Speaking on what motivated her to embark on the project, she said that in developed countries, access to school supplies as simple as a pencil was often taken for granted and that majority of students found themselves disposing of unwanted and extra supplies.
“P4A knows that under-supplied students do not get to receive the fullest experience of their learning, especially when they lack something as basic as a pencil.
“Yet for the millions of under-supplied students residing in developing countries, this luxury is far harder to obtain. Seeking to make an impactful difference is Pencil P4A,” she said.
According to her, the initiative was supported by the Kettle Moraine School District (KMSD) vision of Learning Without Boundaries, staff and students of Cushing Elementary School, Dousman Elementary School, Wales Elementary School, Kettle Moraine Middle School and Kettle Moraine High School.
