An NGO, Initiative for the Advancement of Albinism Cause (INAAC), has offered free medical services to persons with albinism in Benin City, the Edo State capital.
The founder of INAAC, Joy Odigie, also announced a plan to launch a skin and eye trust fund for persons with albinism to provide critical resources to address their unique challenges.
Speaking with journalists during the event, Joy said the medical services were designed to help mitigate and take care of some of the ailments associated with persons with albinism.
She said, “The essence is to create awareness about the challenges facing persons with albinism such as vision, and skill challenges to see how we can mitigate and reduce these challenges.
“So, we have ear, nose, skin and eye doctors here who would give the free check up and do referral for persons with albinism who have serious ailments to where they can get affordable treatment.”
She said they discovered that the rate of skin cancer with persons with albinism was on the increase due to climate change and rising temperatures, noting that, “Today’s free treatment will enable them to undergo free skin cancer check; which is very expensive.
