This was disclosed by the national coordinator of WOFAN, Hajia Salamatu Garba, on the occasion of the Gabasawa local government schools competition, saying the quiz, which was tagged “Amina Shekarau Schools Sanitation and Hygiene Competition for Kano State ,” came as a follow up to WOFAN’s activities to improve sanitation and wellbeing of schools and communities.

Salamatu said the competition, sponsored by WOFAN, was a continuation of the activities scheduled for the International Women’s Day, of which the wife of the State’s governor, Hajia Amina Shekarau, commenced since March 2009.

She added that the aim was to ensure pupils attained good health through sanitation and hygiene activities with a view to complementing government effort.

The coordinator explained that the selected schools for the competition were those WOFAN had earlier on intervened in through the constructions of boreholes and latrines. “The selected schools for the competition are those schools where WOFAN had either had interventions in constructing a total of 126 compartment VIP latrines and 38 boreholes through its Water and Development Alliance (WADA) project,” she said.

The competition, which is currently going on in the selected local government areas has as prizes six sets of Desktop computers with printers, for the schools that came first and about 50 pieces of 2500 litres of water tanks, over one thousand packs of soaps among others for all participating schools.

Participants, according to her, were drawn from among members of the Environmental Health Club, a club that was initiated by WOFAN in those schools with a view to improving hygiene and sanitation.

Earlier in her remarks the Kano State first lady, Hajia Amina Shekarau who was represented by her press secretary Hajia Maryam Yerima said the collaboration with WOFAN was to ensure that pupils have access to portable water and good sanitation in their schools.

Local government selected for the competition includes Gabasawa, Dala, Nassarawa, Kabo, Kumbotso and Garun-Malam.
