To improve the fortunes of coaching in Nigeria, a non-government organisation, Lighthouse Rescue Sports Outreach in partnership with 3D Institute, USA has trained forty coaches on 3D coaching.
A 3D coach is fundamentally sound, skilled at coaching the mind, and focused on capturing the heart.
The training which was held at the National Sports Institute (NSI), Abuja saw forty coaches from different sports converging to learn the fundamentals of 3D coaching.
Speaking with the President of Lighthouse Rescue Sports outreach, Geoffrey Bottson, the training goes beyond coaching the physical needs of athletes.

“It all started from our coaching system in Nigeria, we have seen our coaches doing a good job. Seeing their desire for more development decided to partner with 3D institute from the US. Our coaches should learn from three dimensions. We meet the physical needs of our athletes, but what of their emotional needs? We need to coach their minds as well.
“We have 40 coaches that we invited and they cut across all the sports such as football, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, martial arts and others. All of them will learn about 3D coaching from the first dimension. For now, this is an introduction to 3D and we have the course proper for coaches who want to study further,” he said.
Similarly, the Director of International Development for the 3D Institute, Mark Hull said the coaches are being trained on coaching the mind of players.
“We are training coaches to coach the mind and the heart of players, not just the skills and strategies. We are built on a foundation of purpose. We also help them to discover the proper statement for coaching and that’s what empowers the coaches,” he said.
