CEED in collaboration with the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), sensitized stakeholders in a capacity building workshop for Community Based Organisations (CBOs), Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Faith Based Organisations and the media on Universal Precaution and Medical Waste Management, held at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano.

The NGO said it was going to train stakeholders such as legal practitioners and tutors of health on medical waste management and universal precaution to improve waste handling, adaption to safety compliance and primary prevention of HIV/AIDS and working tools that will serve as guideline for medical waste managements.

The coordinator of the NGO, Christian S. Nkom, emphasised collective procedure in the management of medical waste by employing some kind of specialty.

The Chief Environmental Health Officer of the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Sanusi Datti Reho, in a paper presentation titled: “Medical Waste Management,” urged the lawmakers to enforce more laws on medical waste management with facilities needed for the management.

He further shed more light on the importance of a hygienic environment “Our environment determines our health and should be given extra care.”

Another speaker, Nura A. Yaro, the provost of the School of Hygiene, Kano, said neglect of environmental awareness campaigns has led to a hazardous environment and the spread of HIV and other infectious diseases. Yaro encouraged media organizations to fully enlighten the public on the issue as he said that very little is heard on the issue of environment.

Wise usage and proper disposal of waste materials, segregation of expired drugs was encouraged.
