A nongovernment organisation, Northern Education Initiative Plus (NEI‎ Plus) plans to train 30,000 teachers in Bauchi and Sokoto states through the State Universal Basic Education Board ( SUBEB).

The programme tagged ‘Mu Karanta’ (or “let’s read”) will be carried out over a five-year period, and aims to train the teachers ‎in order to improve the reading skills of 1.5 million pupils in the two states.

A third state to benefit from the programme will also be picked soon.

"Presently, the project has equipped 5,178 teachers and 1,581 headteachers in schools across 10 local governments of Bauchi State with skills to teach reading in Hausa from Primary 1 and gradually transition to English in Primary 2 and 3."

According to NEI Plus, Teachers Guides and Pupils books have been distributed in 1,581 schools.

It added that the materials were developed by ‎about 100 local and international reading experts using key components of reading‎.

Twenty leading education experts will be master trainers, and 241 selected school managers as trainers of teachers to equip teachers with more knowledge and skills to teach the children using the developed materials.

"According to data obtained from the annual schools census of 2014/2015 enrolment increased in our 10 supported local government areas by 10 percent from 260,043 pupils to 284,748 pupils in 1,581 schools."
