An NGO, Sight Savers, has immunised 20,000 children under the age of one against child killer diseases in Sokoto State.

Speaking at the flagging off of the exercise in the Kalambaina area in Wamakko LGA on Friday, the state’s Programme Coordinator of Sight Savers, Muhammad Rilwan, said it was due to the high rate of child mortality.

While noting that 25 per cent child mortality was recorded every year in the state, explained that the children were administered Azithromycin which was a very effective antibiotic.

He said, “It will prevent the children against diseases such as pneumonia and measles.

“The drug was tested and found very effective. We gave the first and the second rounds of the drug in this local government and the results are positive, hence the need for this third round.”

On his part, the state’s Immunisation Officer, Mr Garba Bashar, thanked Sight Savers for the gesture, assuring them of their sustained support.
