A non-governmental organisation, High Level Women Advocate (HILWA), based in Katsina State has called for concerted efforts to address the plight of over 620,000 out of school children in Katsina.
Chairperson of HILWA, Mariya Abdullahi who was speaking at a sensitization tour in Katsina said over half of that number are girls.
She said there is need for the creation of an enabling environment that will ensure the rights of every child and, most importantly, the girl-child.
While identifying socio-cultural and economic environment as the bane of girl education in the state, Abdullahi said the association has embarked on massive awareness campaigns towards tackling the situation.
She said that government must evolve policies and programmes that will encourage parents to enroll their wards in schools while noting that there is insufficient investment in addressing the challenges of girls.
