A 35-year-old woman, Hauwa Usman from Gambaki village near Azare, has successfully delivered a set of quadruplets at the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Azare (FUHSTHA), under the National Health Insurance Authority’s (NHIA) Comprehensive Emergency Maternal, Obstetric and Neonatal Care (CEmONC) programme.
Hauwa, a mother of five, was rushed to the hospital after experiencing heavy bleeding. Doctors, initially expecting triplets, delivered four babies—two boys and two girls—through a caesarean section. Both mother and children are reported to be in stable condition.
All costs, including surgery, medicines, blood transfusions and ward admission, were fully covered by the NHIA programme, in line with the President Bola Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
NHIA Director-General, Dr. Kelechi Ohiri, said the intervention demonstrates the agency’s commitment to protecting Nigerians from out-of-pocket health expenses. “People paying out of pocket is very scary and not the way to go,” he stressed.
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, also noted that the quadruplet delivery reflects progress in expanding health insurance coverage nationwide. He said over 20 million Nigerians are now enrolled, compared to 16 million two years ago.
NHIA Assistant Director in Bauchi, Shamsuddeen Yahaya, described the successful delivery as a “national success story,” highlighting the programme’s impact on vulnerable families.
The hospital community, including the Chief Medical Director’s wife and staff, also supported the family with baby-care items.
Hauwa and her quadruplets are recuperating well, while her husband expressed gratitude to the hospital and NHIA for saving his family without financial burden.
