A statement signed by Salisu Hassan of the public relations unit of NHIS in Maiduguri, quoted Alhaji Abdul-Salam Bala, the north east zonal coordinator of NHIS, as saying that the MOU was an ample opportunity for Yobe government to reduce the rate of maternal and child mortality in the state.

The coordinator commended the state for the level of cooperation shown towards the successful take off of the programme, the statement said.

Alhaji Idris Macinama, the state commissioner for health, in his remark, expressed happiness on the selection of the state for the programme. He also gave an assurance that the state would continue to fund the programme even after the withdrawal of the MDG in 2012, the statement also said.  Yobe State government and the office of the MDG will contribute N600 million to fund the project on 50 percent – 50 percent basis. The NHIS is to facilitate the provision of free medical services to women and children through an insurance scheme.
